A Hidden Feature in the Car That Comes in Handy in Traffic Jams. Many Drivers Do Not Know About It

Many drivers do not know that there is a hidden feature in the car that comes in very handy if we have the 'pleasure' of standing in traffic. It's called auto hold, and it's now on the equipment of most new production cars (as well as a sizable number of older models in the higher grades).

    Hidden Function in the Car

The auto hold function, is also known as the automatic braking function. It is becoming very common in vehicles, as manufacturers are increasingly switching from manual to electric braking. It can make your life easier and your driving experience more comfortable. Especially when you are moving in urban traffic, it allows your leg to rest.

Thanks to it, you don't have to worry about having to manually apply the parking brake. That is, mainly about the vehicle rolling backwards when switching from one pedal to another.

    How it Works

Auto-hold is part of the ABS and ESP system. Usually you can activate it by pressing the brake harder at a standstill. In some cars, you will activate it by pressing a special "auto-hold" button. In the latter case, it is usually located near the electric parking brake switch. If you activate the auto hold, the system will automatically maintain the pressure that was applied when braking. This means that you won't have to press the pedal again and again to avoid moving backward or forward sometimes.

    Worth Remembering

There are a few things to keep in mind when using auto hold.

    • Always check that the Auto-Hold function is active. Don't assume in advance that it definitely is, because you could very literally drive off and hit someone in front of you or behind you.
    • Another thing to keep in mind is that Auto-Hold can only be activated if you are inside the vehicle with the doors closed and your seat belt fastened. Otherwise, you won't be able to activate the feature.
    • Also keep in mind that if you are towing a vehicle or trailer, most car manufacturers recommend disabling Auto Hold.

Also remember that this function does not replace the vehicle's handbrake. Make sure you apply it if you park in a sloping area!
