48 Days against plastic
A group from the Ocean Voyages Institute regularly battles plastic in ocean waters. In 2019, they cleaned up nearly 50 tons of assorted trash as part of their campaign. In 2020, they doubled that amount!
Their last action ended on June 23, 2020 and lasted 48 days
During this time they managed to collect more than 103 tons of various plastic waste or old fishing nets. Their ship is a specially prepared vessel for cleanup operations. It was equipped with special sonar to locate floating waste and a special landing net.
Thanks to this action they managed to beat their previous record
Activists also make sure that trash doesn't end up back in the oceans. They work with recycling companies. They're the ones who took care of their "prey" when they arrived at port after a cruise.
Mary Crowley, the group's founder and director, was delighted with the result of their work:
Ocean Voyages Institute announces that this is not their last campaign. They wish to break another record!
Huge amounts of plastic float in the oceans every day. Isn't it time we stop using so much packaging?
