There are several possible causes why our house can go cold in the winter. Living in such a chilly place, with ambient temperature below zero Centigrade, calls for real survival skills. There is definitely no room for despair, for all you need is a bunch of smart tricks!
#1 Door curtain
Turn one room into a shared bedroom. Close doors and windows to limit the air flow. Fix blankets and thick curtains to the windows.
#2 A traditional hot-water bottle
This old-school item could be used to warm-up your hands and feet.
#3 DIY stove
Using plant pots and candles you can make your own stove. It’s worth keeping one in your basement just in case standard central heating fails.
You can also quickly make an emergency heater. Again, you need a pot, a candle and some kind of supporting structure.
#4 Insulating windows and doors
Put rolled blankets or towels under windows and doors. This is to reduce the inflow of cold air. You can also use old newspapers, styrofoam or cardboard.
#5 Sleeping with pets
If you have a cat or a dog, let them sleep on your bed. The animals will keep you much warmer.
#6 Dress like an onion
Put on several layers, but keep them loose. They keep you much warmer than tight sweaters. Let the first layer be clothes made of natural materials that will let your body breathe. Then put on woolen sweaters, fleece or flannel shirt. That provides good insulation.
#7 Hot drinks
Have several mugs of hot stuff. Avoid alcohol, as this warms you up just for a moment.
#8 Sleep in a tent
If you have one, put it up in the middle of your living room. Inside it will be much warmer. Of course you can sleep in a sleeping bag, too.
#9 Chemical warmers
Always keep a supply of chemical body warmers. Just in case, They can keep warm for even up to 12 hours.
#10 Sealing the windows
Bubble foil can do the trick very well. Trim it to the size of the window pane and stick it properly. The heat loss will be much smaller
