Alternatives to Plastic to Make Your Barbecue a Much ‘Greener’ Thing.

Can barbecue be more ecological? It definitely can. All you need to do is to get rid of plastic.

Environment-friendly barbecue

Normally a barbecue party means using lots of disposable plates and cutlery. While they are practical as you don’t need to bother about washing-up simply throwing them away afterwards, the plastic they are made of is not easily recyclable, though. And this is where eco-friendly barbecue idea begins.

Dishes

There are several kinds of dishes made of more eco-friendly materials. You will find plates made of wheat bran or sugar cane. You can also find some made of palm leaves or paper. Interestingly, they can be used to serve both cold and hot dishes.

Cutlery

To replace plastic knives and forks, you can go for those made of wood or wheat bran. After the meal you just burn them or bury them. They are biodegradable and decompose really easily.

Cups

Drinks could be easily served in paper cups. Another option is bio-plastic. This material is made of oil, seeds and such plants as corn, avocado (pits), rice and sugar cane. They are transparent and they look quite elegant. You can impress your guests serving coffee in cups made of coffee grounds.

Drinking straws

Straws pose a big threat to animals. You’d better replace them with those made of paper or bio-plastic, both available in a variety of colors.

Charcoal

Its best substitute is coconut charcoal briquette. Its production does not entail deforestation as it is made of coconut shells and tapioca manioc starch). Moreover, it is not ‘enriched’ with resins and, consequently, it does not emit so much smoke. It quickly reaches high temperature and keeps it twice longer than standard charcoal.

Lighting

You can easily make the barbecue lighter yourself. Pour some wood sawdust into an egg carton and pour it all with wax. When it cools down, cut it into pieces – one from each egg spot.
