How to repel flies - DIY remedies that work

Below you will find only methods that are completely safe for your health and do not require any chemicals.

Essential oils of lavender, eucalyptus, peppermint and lemongrass

Spraying oils (lavender, eucalyptus, lemongrass, mint) throughout your home will not only create a beautiful aroma, but will also repel annoying flies. For some reason, these insects (as well as many others) dislike the smell of these plants or associate it with danger. To make a homemade repellent, pour water and a few drops of the oil of your choice into an atomizer bottle. Then spray it in the kitchen and other rooms.

Keep fresh basil in your kitchen

Basil is known to repel both flies and mosquitoes, which means it is an excellent kitchen plant. Flies have a similar aversion to lavender, scented geranium, peppermint, or lemongrass (for some reason, they hate their smell). That's why it's a good idea to place pots with these plants in the kitchen. They will make flies evacuate your home very quickly.

    Apple cider vinegar trap

In this case, it's the scent that flies will be attracted to - they love the smell of apples and vinegar. You can create a homemade trap using apple cider vinegar. Mix it with liquid soap and pour it into a bowl. The resulting solution will attract the flies, and by adding soap, they will not be able to get out of the vessel in which they will get trapped.

You can also make a simple handmade fly trap consisting of... a bag of water and coins. It may sound silly, but for some reason it works great. Fill the bag with water and toss the coins into it. Hang the DIY repellent on your patio, over your doors and windows on the outside. The bag works on their sense of sight. The glare of the coins from the bag blinds the fly, which makes it fly somewhere else. The water from the bag will be perceived as a large reservoir of water, which will also deter these insects.

    Keep it clean!

It may sound trivial, but one of the best ways to discourage flies from flying into our home is simply to keep it clean. So you should:

    - not leave leftover food in the kitchen,

    - not place dirty dishes in the sink,

    - take out garbage more often, as rotting food attracts insects,

    - put baking soda on the bottom of the garbage can and place the bag on top of it (the soda will absorb odors and possible spills)

    - keep sugary fizzy drinks in the fridge, as they attract flies.
