Plants are not only decoration. They clean the air and humidify it. Some of them produce oxygen at night, while we are sleeping. What potted plants are best then for our bedrooms?

Aloe vera in the bedroom – properties

Aloe barbadensis

Aloe filters air and at the same time humidifies it. The plant absorbs carbon dioxide at night and gives out oxygen, which we need so much. This is one of the most appreciated species in the bedroom. Apart from the properties mentioned before, it is also used in cosmetic industry. Its leaves are used to make creams and dressings
You need to provide aloe with some space as it grows in all directions.

Snakeplant (Saint George’s sword)

Just like aloe, snake plant produces oxygen at night absorbing carbon dioxide at the same time. It is not a demanding plant. It is also believed to cure headaches and high blood pressure. It is really good for respiratory system and immune system.

English ivy

Ivy is really universal. It must be pointed out here, however, that it has some specific watering requirements. It wonderfully humidifies air and at the same time filters it removing especially cigarette smoke (absorbing formaldehyde).

A very easy-to-grow plant. It humidifies the air and absorbs a number of hazardous compounds, including benzene, formaldehyde, acetone and trichloroethylene. Its flowers do not smell too intensively, so they are just right for your bedroom.

It cleans the air removing dangerous substances, including mould and microorganisms. At the same time it humidifies the air.

Spider plant

Another plant purifying the air. That is why your bedroom is a right spot for it. It is a real filter. Not only does it remove several substances, but it also eradicates hazardous radiation. And it is really easy to look after.

What plants for a dark bedroom?

Snake plant and spath will do well in a dark bedroom environment. Spider plant will grow well in a semi-dark room. If exposed to more light, it loses its white stripes on the leaves.

Also cast-iron plant, also known as bar-room plant (Aspidistra elatior) are worth taking into account. They are resistant to dry conditions and poor lighting.

ZZ plant, also known as Zuzu plant, aroid palm or eternity plant (Zamioculas) is resistant to dry conditions, too. However, due to fast growth it needs more space than cast-iron plant.

Nefrolepis

This is one of the most popular household plants. It prefers dark places and more humidity.

What plants are good for child’s bedroom?

For child’s bedroom it is recommended to use nefrolepsis, daisy, pansy, silver jade plant, spiderwort, spider plant, nasturtium, liliales, tagetes, begonia, pelargonium, orchid, heather, nasturtium or echinacea.

Avoid plants producing juice, giving out a lot of pollen and those with intensively smelling flowers. Children might be allergic and juices may be highly toxic.
Never choose such plants as azalea, oleander, monstera, ivy, hyacinth, fleur-de-lis, daffodil, narcissus, philodendron, hippeastrum, cyclamen, anthurium, zamioculcas, primula obconica, syngonium, raphidophora, dieffenbachia or spurge.
Eating any of these plants might cause diarrhoea, vomiting, rash or even heart malfunctioning.
