Ken Smith (74) is British. He lives by a lake in Scotland in a wooden hut that he built himself. It’s been 40 years since he said ‘goodbye’ to the rest of the world.

    Bad people

When Ken was younger, two events made him decide to choose the lifestyle he lives now. The first one took place when he was I his twenties. After a party he was badly beaten by a group of young men. He ended up in a hospital with serious head injuries. The doctors managed to save him, though they were concerned that he would never walk or speak again.

    An expedition

Contrary to all the forecasts, Ken managed to recover completely. Though it cost him a lot of effort and determination, very soon he set off to explore the wild areas of ice-cold Canada. It was then when the idea of living a secluded life first dawned on him. Still, it might have never been completed but for the fact that once he got back from Canada, another disaster struck him.

    Hurt by life

When he came back to his hometown of Derbyshire, he found out that his parents had died. This event shattered him. One day he decided to leave his family house and moved to Scotland. One day, strolling on his own through a forest, he came across a place that enchanted him. He decided to settle there, separating himself completely from other people. Immediately he got down to building a wooden hut.

    A hermit

And this is how he has spent 40 years of his life. He eats fish caught in the lake and grows his own vegetables in the tine garden near his hut. Although he is in his mid-seventies now, he is not thinking of coming back to the civilization. A couple of years ago a documentary was made about him. It has been recently broadcast by British television. In fact this is how we found out about Kevin.
