At first, tiny succulents look really inconspicuous and resemble any small plants. As time passes on, when they grow to its maximum size (this one can be even 20 cm tall),they begin to look like charming bunnies. It’s all because of the ‘ears’ which in fact are the leaves of the plant.

This species has been popular in Japan for quite a few years now. It’s official name is Monilaria obconica, however most commonly they are referred to as ‘succulent-rabbits’. The plant comes from southern parts of Africa. It likes a lot of sun exposure, a little bit of water and good air flow. Some of them, grown outside, might even survive a winter as long as it is mild.

While it is difficult to get it in gardening stores, its seeds are available online. How to plant a succulent rabbit?

First prepare the seed bed. Mix equal portions of sand and potting soil. Then soak it with water and put it into a pot with draining holes. Leave approximately 5 cm from the top of the pot empty. Sprinkle the seeds and then cover it with thin layer of sand and crashed pebbles.

Use a bottle with a sprayer and spray some water over the soil. Try to keep the soil moist throughout the sprouting period. Cover the pot with foil to keep the moist in the pot. Then put the pot in a warm and sunny place. The best temperature for this plant ranges from 15 to 25 degrees C. If necessary, put a heating mat under the pot. The seeds should start sprouting within 10-15 days.
