Employees of popular fast-food chains shared some clues and hints with us. They are definitely worth remembering.
#1 Try to give up on ice in drinks
The ice machines are really difficult to be kept clean, which makes them true Petri dishes. According to research conducted in 2010, 48% machines in fast-food restaurants contained coli bacteria, and a few of them E.coli commonly present in excrements.
The microbiologists form the Hollins University have no idea where these could come from. It could be either dirty cleaning accessories or unwashed customers’ hands. There’s also a possibility that the machines weren’t regularly cleaned.
#2 If you are concerned about the freshness of an ingredient, check the menu
If a given ingredient is present in a number of dishes, it is far more likely to be fresh. If it’s just one, it’s not that certain.
#3 When you don’t eat meat, you’d better carefully check other ingredients
The thing is that sometimes french fries are fried in animal fat and a seemingly vegetable burger contains milk.
A popular chain has recently launched a “Veggie Burger’; while the burger was purely vegetarian, the dish also included cheese and sauce with dairy products. While we are all supposed to check the ingredients ourselves, wouldn’t our lives be easier if there was a little note about it?
#4 It all tastes the same for a reason
Have you noticed that all the parts of fast-food meals taste the same? Burgers, fries, onion rings or even shakes – they are all alike.
It all boils down to the fact that they have been calibrated to stimulate our taste buds to make us eat even more. So it’s all not too meaty and not too ‘vege’.
Moreover, we all like to eat things we know. As a result, the menu of fast-food burger restaurants do not quite differ one from another.
#5 Fast-food places are designed for fast service and fast consumption
It takes about 20 minutes for the ‘I’m full message’ to travel from the stomach to our brains. So the faster you eat, the more you have to buy, as your brain does not know yet you are full. Eating a small 2 for U sets at McDonald’s will take you just a moment.
A solution? Just eat more slowly.
#6 You are not special
People are more likely to make unhealthy choices in a restaurant when they think the place is somehow special.
Remember that eating in a place with a clown does not mean you are at a party!
#7 The food today contains far more calories than it used to
The findings of research published in Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics point out that the dishes served by the top 10 fast-food giants have increased their caloric input by 90 since 1986. And the portions are getting more and more calory-packed.
#8 The barbecue prints on the burgers are false
The barbecue grill traces on pieces of chicken are supposed to make you think that the meat was flame-processed. In fact the truth is that most of was marked or painted with food dyes. Plus artificial flavors of smoke and coal. Yummy!
#9 It’s all about the timing
If you are planning to eat out in a fast-food restaurant, the best times are 11.00 AM – 1:00 PM and 6:00 – 7:00 PM. This is when the food is the freshest.
#10 Open kitchens
Have you wondered why the kitchens in fast-food places are not separated from the rest of the restaurant? Of course it’s all deliberate. The smells coming from the kitchen are supposed to stimulate your taste buds and make you order more than you actually need.
According to scientific research, missing cutlery works in the same way, as food eaten with hands tastes better.
#11 Just to make us eat more
Experts have discovered that if we are offered something very directly, we are less likely to oppose. It was estimated that 85% people say ‘yes’ whenever they are offered a product in a fast-food restaurant.
