One of the first plants that was grown by people was tomato. Many of us love this small red fruit (or vegetable in kitchen terms) and can’t imagine salads, sandwiches and other dishes without them. They are simply so healthy and refreshing. The only problem is that in the colder part of year it is really difficult to get good quality tomatoes. Isn’t it a good idea to grow your own then?
Growing tomatoes – how you can easily do that at home
Although I don’t quite fall for tomatoes, the rest of my family love them. That is why I decided to check out a method to grow our own tomatoes free from any pesticides. This trick is really easy. All you need is to use overripe tomatoes that usually end up in the bin.
Things you need to grow tomatoes at home:
– garden compost
– potting soil
– an empty container or a big pot
– a knife
– overripe tomatoes
Growing tomatoes – how to plant them
1. Fill half of the pot with a mixture of potting soil and compost
2. Slice the tomatoes into 0.5 cm thick pieces
3. Put the slices on the soil
4. Pick up a bit of the soil and slightly cover the tomatoes
5. Give it some water so that the soil is neither dry nor too wet.
6. After 1-2 weeks the seeds should start sprouting
And that’s it! Isn’t it easy? After 2-3 weeks there should be about 50 seedlings. Don’t leave them in one pot. Pick the stronger ones and plant them in the spring in your garden. While doing it make sure the plants have enough space to grow. Leave only 2 seedlings in a pot.
Why is it worth growing tomatoes at home?
First of all they contain a lot of antioxidants. They are good for our liver and provide a lot of vitamin C. What is more, they contain potassium and they are low in calories. Thanks to their hydrating properties they also make your skin look healthier.
