Homemade Deer Repellent Spray. It Is Cheap and Environmentally Friendly

You’ve worked hard to have a beautiful garden, where you have a nice time and can also show it off to your friends, and suddenly you notice that you have an unforeseen problem with visitors from the forest. What deters deer? How to make them not want to “look” into our garden?

“Oh, a deer! How I am NOT happy…”

For many rural or suburban homeowners, long gone are the days when seeing a deer or roe deer near their property made them happy. Today, many owners’ blood pressure rises at the sight of them. This is because they know that the wild animals of the forest “visit” them to munch on their carefully tended flowers, shrubs and even trees. In many places, deer have become a serious nuisance, threatening to destroy well-kept and carefully tended home gardens and yards.

What Keeps Deer Away?

Here are the best ways to keep them away.

Use Scented Repellents

There are many scented repellents available that promise to keep deer away from your garden. The best of these contain real or simulated urine from predators that hunt deer and roe deer. They are often sold as broad-spectrum repellents that are also effective on rabbits, raccoons and squirrels.

Other (often cheaper) repellents use spices or rotten egg extracts not liked by deer. Remember that such repellent spray must be reapplied to the plants after every rain. It is not enough to just spray the ground; scented repellents should be sprayed on all branches up to 70 inches above the ground. It is a good idea to have several different scent preparations and rotate them to prevent deer from becoming accustomed to and immune to one scent.

Use Motion and Sound-Based Deterrents

Deer don’t like sudden, unfamiliar movement, so gardens with solar-powered windmills, scarecrow-type devices or motion-activated lights can effectively scare away deer and deer. Even wind chimes can scare away deer.

If too much sound is not pleasant for you or your neighbors, there are also ultrasonic devices powered by small solar panels and activated by motion sensors. The high-pitched sound is not audible to humans, but is extremely unpleasant to deer and deer. Water sprinklers combined with motion sensors can also be very effective in keeping these animals away.

Dogs in the Backyard

The presence of almost any dog can be an effective deterrent to deer and roe deer. Even if your dog isn’t very active or doesn’t seem threatening, the smell of dog urine around the yard is already effective in deterring deer and deer in many cases. Of course, your dog can also be a source of destruction in your yard, but even basic training should prevent this.

Home Remedies for Deer

You can also use home remedies to deter deer. Hanging strips soaked in fabric softener on trees will work here. Spraying plants with a mixture of hot peppers, garlic and rotten eggs is also effective. Placing rags soaked in ammonia around the garden and arranging bags of human hair around the garden also work well.

What Scents Deter Deer?

Deer, in addition to the aforementioned household tricks, do not like and even avoid ordinary bar soap. Ordinary, that is, one that contains tallow. In addition, the soap should smell intensely. Internet users most often mention Irish Spring soap, to be bought online in some places.

Tallow is tallow, and sodium tallowate, still often used in bar soaps, is the sodium salt of animal fat. Tallow in such soaps is animal fat from leftovers not used in the meat industry. Deer, and indeed hares too, run away from the smell of such soap.

Although one may wonder whether it is the tallow that effectively repels animals or another ingredient in the bar soap, the fact is that many people praise this method.

Homemade Liquid Fence Recipe

Spraying the border of the garden with a homemade spray successfully replaces store scented repellents. Using the spray creates an odor barrier that both deer and hares, do not want to overcome. Here is the recipe:

  • 2 eggs
  • 4 cloves of garlic, crushed
  • 1 tablespoon of organic dish liquid (chemical-free) or chemical-free liquid soap
  • 10-20 drops of clove oil – optional
  • 5 liters of water

Crack the eggs and combine them with the garlic and water in a bucket. Cover the concoction and expose it to the sun for 24-48 hours. So that it will ferment and become really effective. After that, drain the garlic pieces, add dish liquid and clove oil.

Put such a finished liquid in a sprayer and spray generously on each area of the garden. You can also make a spray between the vegetable beds. Plants are not harmed by such a spray. After a heavy rain, apply again.

So it’s worth combining all the above methods, and deer and deer will avoid your garden from afar.
