A Clever Trick of Gardeners: They Bury Whole Eggs and Bananas in the Ground

If you have your own garden, or at least grow some indoor potted plants, this is a trick you should definitely try. Many gardeners bury raw eggs, often with bananas, in the soil under the plants they grow.

You may not have heard about it yet, but eggs and bananas are some of the best natural fertilizers for many plants. In the last decade or so, fertilizing soil with them has become very popular in some parts of the world - especially among hobby gardeners who have small crops and can afford to devote a little extra time to their plants.

What do eggs and bananas contain? The former has a whole range of useful nutrients (copper, fluorine, iron, silicon, zinc, among others), but calcium is especially important for plants. It strengthens the stem, the cell walls and also makes the plant much more resistant to stress situations. Calcium is essential for growing tomatoes to prevent leaf rot.

Bananas, on the other hand, are considered to be the best organic source of one of the 3 most necessary components for plants to grow - potassium. They have a lot of it, it is estimated that 42% of a banana is potassium. This is why they are so good at supporting the growth of almost all plants.

"Okay, I have eggs and bananas prepared, how to use them?" - it's very simple: just bury them in the ground at a depth of about 25 cm (or slightly more) under a plant/plants - and that's it. Every now and then, of course, you can bury a new egg and a new banana. But it is important not to bury them too shallow - a rotting egg and banana gives off a very strong and unpleasant smell. Even if this is not a problem for you, you should take into account that it will probably attract pests to your garden. Just to add, banana and egg can also be used in pots.

If you don't want to bury a whole egg and banana there are still a few minor tricks that will help your plants grow. Instead of an egg you can bury just the shells, preferably crushed as much as possible. Watering plants with water that has been used to boil eggs or water that has been used to soak banana peels will also give them some nutrients.

Do not use eggs and eggshells for plants whose substrate should be acidic! For potted flowers, do not use for ferns and azaleas.
